EVERY
FIRST RESPONDER HAS A DAY ONE.
We’re working to ensure every first responder begins their career with the mental health education, resilience skills, and leadership support they deserve.
HELP CHANGE A FIRST RESPONDER’S DAY ONE
In 2017, the fire service crossed a line no one ever wanted to cross. For the first time, more firefighters died by suicide than died in the line of duty. That moment highlighted a gap in how public safety prepares its people. We teach responders how to survive physical danger, but too often we fail to prepare them for the cumulative psychological demands of a lifetime of service.
The Day One Foundation was created to answer one simple question:
Why weren't we teaching these skills on Day One?
Why We Exist
From the first day of the academy, first responders receive hundreds—often thousands—of hours of training. They learn how to fight fires, respond to medical emergencies, enforce the law, rescue victims, and perform under extraordinary pressure.
But one of the most important aspects of the profession is often overlooked.
The emotional and psychological realities of a career spent responding to trauma, loss, violence, and human suffering.
Over time, cumulative stress can affect physical health, mental well-being, relationships, decision-making, job performance, and organizational culture. Families feel the impact, departments experience the consequences, and communities ultimately depend on healthy first responders.
The Problem
Research and experience continue to demonstrate that proactive mental health education, resilience training, supportive leadership, and healthy organizational cultures can strengthen individuals, improve performance, reduce stigma, and better prepare first responders for the realities of a lifetime of service.
At the Day One Foundation, we believe these conversations and skills should not begin after a critical incident or personal crisis.
The good news is that these outcomes are not inevitable.
They should begin on Day One.
We Prepare First Responders to Save Others. We Haven’t Done Enough to Prepare Them to Protect Themselves.
The Day One Foundation exists to build, validate, fund, and deploy the Day One Psychological Readiness Frameworkâ„¢, ensuring every first responder has access to evidence-informed psychological readiness education from the beginning of their career.
Our Mission
Our Vision
To establish psychological readiness as a national standard in public safety, helping first responders build healthier careers, stronger families, more resilient organizations, and thriving communities.
At the center of the Framework is Psychological Readiness. Seven evidence-informed foundational elements support long-term readiness and lead to measurable outcomes such as human-centered leadership, stronger teams, healthier relationships, operational readiness, and reduced burnout.
How We Help
Mental Health Education
We help expand access to proactive mental health and resilience education that prepares first responders for the emotional realities of a lifetime of service. By supporting evidence-informed training from the beginning of a career, we help build stronger individuals before challenges become crises.
Healthy organizational cultures begin with healthy leaders. We support leadership education that equips supervisors, officers, and executives to recognize stress, reduce stigma, foster resilience, and create workplaces where behavioral health is valued and supported.
Leadership Development
Financial limitations should never prevent first responders from accessing life-saving education. Through scholarships and grant funding, we help agencies, recruit academies, and individual first responders gain access to behavioral health training and wellness initiatives.
Scholarships & Grants
The effects of public safety service extend beyond the individual first responder. We support educational resources and programs that strengthen spouses, partners, children, and families, helping them better understand the unique challenges of a career in public safety.
Family Support
Lasting change requires collaboration. We work alongside fire departments, law enforcement agencies, EMS organizations, dispatch centers, corrections, educational institutions, nonprofit organizations, and community partners to expand access to behavioral health resources and strengthen organizational wellness.
Agency & Community Partnerships
We believe tomorrow's solutions require today's investment. The Foundation supports research, innovation, and the development of evidence-informed programs that improve behavioral health outcomes and help shape the future of first responder wellness.

Why Your Support Matters
Every day, first responders answer calls that most of us will never experience. They witness tragedy, loss, violence, and human suffering—often carrying those experiences long after the emergency ends.
More first responders have died by suicide than in the line of duty in recent years. Many others struggle with chronic stress, post-traumatic stress, burnout, sleep disruption, and strained relationships at home. Too often, the support and education they need comes after years of exposure, when the damage has already begun.
Imagine if they had received that preparation from the very beginning.
Imagine if every firefighter, police officer, paramedic, dispatcher, and corrections professional started their career with the knowledge, skills, and support that so many experienced first responders wish they had on Day One.
The Day One Foundation exists to make that future possible. Your gift helps ensure that those who dedicate their lives to protecting our communities are better prepared to protect themselves—and continue serving with strength, resilience, and purpose throughout their careers.
Every first responder begins their career with a Day One.
It's the day they put on the uniform.
The day they raise their hand.
The day they commit to protecting others.
Together, we can help ensure they also begin with the mental health education, resilience skills, and support needed to thrive throughout a lifetime of service.
Whether you choose to donate, become a partner, sponsor training, or simply share our mission, your support helps create a future where every first responder starts stronger than the generation before them.
Because changing the future of public safety begins with changing Day One.
